Rules of the Road

The following rules must be followed when using the All-Weather Access Road:

  • This is not a public road. Access to the road is authorized by the Agnico Eagle Security Guard at the Baker Lake Gatehouse.
  • Only ATVs are allowed to travel on the road.
  • Wildlife has the right of way.
  • Maximum speed limit of 50 km/h. Obey all posted speed limit signage.
  • All hunting activity must respect a one-kilometer no-shooting zone around the road and shooting around the work area is strictly forbidden.
  • If the Gatehouse is closed, the road is also closed, and access is not allowed. This is likely due to unsafe weather, road conditions or other safety precautions.
  • Use of the Meadowbank All-Weather Access Road is at your own risk. Agnico Eagle is not responsible for personal injury or property damage.
  • Agnico Eagle reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone who does not respect these safety rules and procedures.
  • Agnico Eagle reserves the right to restrict public access in periods of heavy mine traffic flow, for example, during the transfer of supplies from Baker Lake to Meadowbank after the annual sealift. This will only be done in consultation with the HTO and Baker Lake Hamlet (Mayor).

Procedures for Road Access

  1. Report to the Baker Lake Gatehouse to access the road. Provide your name and expected time of return. Agnico Eagle Dispatch will explain the safety rules and procedures and provide an update on current road and weather conditions.
  2. Agnico Eagle Dispatch will provide a safety vest that must be worn while travelling on the AWAR.
  3. Use radio to indicate your location at all blind hills on way to and from site.
  4. Agnico Eagle traffic has the right of way – the ATV must pull off the road when a vehicle is oncoming or approaching from behind and wait for that vehicle to pass before entering back onto the road.
  5. If you stop, pull off to the side of the road. Do not stop in the middle of the road.
  6. When travelling in groups please travel one behind the other, do not travel side by side.
  7. Access is forbidden beyond km 85 as this is getting close to active mining areas where safety concerns are more critical.
  8. Return safety vest to Baker Lake Gatehouse.

The following rules must be followed when using the All-Weather Access Road:

  • Maximum speed limit of 50 km/h. Obey all posted speed limit signage.
  • Use of seat belts by all drivers and passengers is mandatory at all times.
  • Littering along the road is prohibited.
  • Wildlife has right-of-way on the roads, and no harassment of wildlife is allowed.
  • All hunting activity must avoid shooting across the road and should respect a safe shooting distance from the road (1 km) as per road management plan.
  • Hunting is prohibited within 1 km of the AWAR and the Project.
  • Vehicles are not to park on the travelling surface of the road but pull off the road at a safe location such as passing turnouts to prevent accidents (passing turnouts are spaced approximately every 400 ± 50 m along AWAR length).
  • No public traffic is allowed within mining areas; these are industrial work sites and, thus, non-Project related vehicles will be stopped at the gate.
  • Use radio to indicate your location at all blind hills on way to and from site.
  • Call dispatch before leaving Rankin Inlet to come to site – will need Pick-up identification, name of driver and number of passengers. Same when leaving site to go to Rankin Inlet.
