The process aims to provide a clear and concise description of each projects linked to the water management at Meliadine.

2018 - Saline Water Diffuser Installation

Old seawater that has been trapped underground is released during development.
Salt water is pumped to the surface where it is cleaned in a water treatment facility to remove debris.
The clean salt water is loaded on trucks which drive to Melvin Bay.

2019 - Emergency Amendment

In 2019, it was an abnormally wet year, bringing unexpected levels of rain and snow melts.
The normal discharge process was suspended due to rising levels of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the water. TDS measures all dissolved salts and minerals in the water within the collecting pond (CP1).
To effectively manage higher levels of water runoff from the melt, Agnico Eagle requested an Emergency Amendment to Meliadine’s Water License.
An amendment to the water license had to be approved before freshet otherwise risks to the infrastructure and environment, we requested an emergency amendment that is temporary until October 2020
