Our largest development project based on reserves and resources.

Agnico Eagle’s Meliadine gold project in Nunavut territory, northern Canada is set to become our second mine in Canada’s Low Arctic, following the Meadowbank mine. It also represents our largest gold deposit in terms of mineral resources.

The Meliadine project was approved for development on February 16, 2017 and achieved commercial production in May 2019.

The Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) issued a Project Certificate in February 2015, setting out the terms on which the project can proceed and in July 2015, Agnico Eagle and the Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) signed the official Inuit Impact Benefit Agreement (IIBA) for the Meliadine project. Through the agreement, both the company and the KIA commit to ensuring that business opportunities, employment and training opportunities arising from the mine will benefit the Inuit of the Kivalliq Region. The IIBA also addresses the protection of Inuit values, culture and language, protection of the land, water and wildlife, and provides financial compensation to Inuit over the course of the mine’s life. Agnico Eagle and the KIA are jointly working toward a target of 50% Inuit employment at the mine.
