Derek Irwin’s journey into the realm of environmental technology and entrepreneurship is a testament to the transformative power of opportunity and dedication. From his roots in Rankin Inlet to the corridors of academia and entrepreneurship, Derek’s story exemplifies resilience, passion, and a commitment to his community and cultural heritage.

Background, Inspiration, and Influence

It all began with a summer job opportunity that changed his life. “I was looking for a summer job when my good friend sent me an opportunity to do baseline habitat assessments for char and to go back at Mary River on beautiful Baffin Island,” Derek recalls. The experience of catching fish and collecting data amidst stunning landscapes ignited his passion for the environment and led him to pursue a two-year program degree in Environmental Technology in Iqaluit.

While the summer job played a significant role in shaping Derek’s career path, other experiences and people also influenced his decision. However, his journey wasn’t solely shaped by this pivotal moment; Derek credits his family, particularly his mother and sister, for their unwavering support and encouragement.

Scholarship Opportunity

In February 2023, Joanie Denomme, the Social Affairs Lead at Agnico Eagle, visited Nunavut Arctic College to discuss job opportunities with the students. Among them was Derek, who eagerly participated in the workshops. Joanie noticed his enthusiasm for Agnico Eagle’s programs and made a note of it. She described Derek as remarkably mature, vibrant, and deeply engaged in his studies. She also highlighted his commitment to community service, which greatly influenced their decision. He applied and was awarded the Perseverance (Kajussissimainnarniq) scholarship offered by Agnico Eagle through the Young Mining Professional Scholarship Fund (YMPSF).

Reflecting on his experience, Derek expressed gratitude for the financial relief the scholarship provided, allowing him to focus on his studies without the weight of financial stress. “It felt like a burden lifted off my shoulders,” he recalls. Additionally, the scholarship also boosted his confidence and gave him the recognition needed to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams.

The Young Mining Professional Program

Derek’s story is also a testament to the broader goals of the Young Mining Professional (YMP) program, which is designed to provide financial help to students pursuing careers in mining-related fields. Agnico Eagle proudly collaborates with YMP and administers the Perseverance scholarship through this partnership. As Joanie explains, “It’s a scholarship tailored for Nunavut students, awarded annually to post-secondary students studying in mining-related fields.”

Agnico Eagle prioritizes the support and guidance of emerging professionals. The company provides internships and hands-on learning opportunities, fostering invaluable practical experience. Moreover, Agnico Eagle is dedicated to cultivating enduring connections with interns, with the goal of offering permanent positions whenever possible.

Entrepreneurial Endeavors

The scholarship not only empowered Derek’s academic journey but also fueled his entrepreneurial spirit. He founded Qaumajuq Environmental Limited, driven by a vision to nurture Inuit scientists and integrate traditional wisdom into environmental research. “Our aim is to provide a platform for Inuit to embark on their scientific careers,” Derek elaborates. His goal is to cultivate an environment where Inuit biologists and environmental technicians lead projects deeply rooted in their cultural heritage. Qaumajuq Environmental Limited serves as a catalyst for individuals to achieve their aspirations and drive positive change in their communities.

Valuable Lessons and Skills

Through his studies, Derek acquired not only technical knowledge but also invaluable life lessons. Derek believes that perseverance and consistency are crucial. “Pushing through and committing time and effort to things you value ultimately forge your character,” he asserts.

Looking ahead, Derek is committed to making a positive impact in Nunavut and beyond. His advice to aspiring Inuit professionals is clear: “Find your passion and be fearless. There are so many opportunities in our territory,” he encourages. He also emphasizes the importance of education and experience and believes that overcoming initial barriers can lead to great achievements.

Business Mentorship Program (Nangminiqaqtunik Ikajuutiit)

Derek has recently enrolled in the Business Mentorship Program or Nangminiqaqtunik Ikajuutiit offered by Agnico Eagle, which offers guidance and support to existing businesses, aspiring entrepreneurs, and those embarking on new ventures. This initiative provides access to seasoned mentors based in the North who offer assistance on a range of topics and challenges tailored to the participants’ needs. The primary aim is to facilitate the establishment or expansion of businesses by helping with legal matters, marketing strategies, and accounting practices. Agnico Eagle thrives to contribute to sustainable economic development to benefit the greatest number of Inuit. We do this by supporting business development with workshops, assistance, and entrepreneurial training to facilitate access of Inuit and Inuit firms to business opportunities on our Kivalliq projects. Derek recently submitted a bid for one of Agnico Eagle’s programs and emerged victorious! This summer, his company will undertake an outreach program consisting of two rotations, each comprising 6-8 Inuit technicians who will be actively engaged in the project.

Derek’s journey personifies the fusion of passion, perseverance, and community-driven entrepreneurship. As he embarks on his latest venture with Agnico Eagle’s program, he not only realizes his own dreams but also pioneers opportunities for others in his community.
