We are proud to celebrate our colleague, David Kritterdlik, from Whale Cove, Nunavut, as the recipient of the 2025 Skookum Jim Award. Presented by The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), this award recognizes Indigenous leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the mining industry.

David was selected for his leadership in integrating Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) principles into mining. As Agnico Eagle’s IQ and Wildlife Advisor, he has helped bridge traditional Inuit knowledge and western science, advancing mining practices that align with Inuit values, environmental responsibility and community well-being.

A key achievement is his creation of the Kivalliq Elders Advisory Committee (KEAC), bringing together 20+ elders from seven communities. Under his leadership, KEAC provides invaluable guidance on wildlife management, water stewardship, climate change, and community development to the Meliadine and Meadowbank mines. His commitment to cultural integrity ensures that KEAC discussions are conducted in Inuktitut, strengthening local engagement and preserving Inuit traditions.

Suzanne Leclair, Community Relations Superintendent, said, “David believed in bringing back Elders involved in the early Nunavut Agreement negotiations to help guide the community uplifts they envisioned from mining. Today, KEAC remains dedicated to environmental stewardship while helping the next generation develop valuable skills. Agnico Eagle is proud to work with the KEAC toward this shared goal.”

David’s leadership extends to community initiatives, including his role in launching the $5 million Inunnguiniq Project, supporting breakfast programs and literacy efforts for children. His advocacy has also shaped Agnico Eagle’s regulatory approach, setting a precedent for incorporating IQ values into responsible resource development.
