There are several activities and projets related to Meliadine’s Water Management that are all related to each other.

  • Approved by NWB on May 12th, 2020.
  • Increased contact surface water discharge into Meliadine Lake.
  • Discharge in progress – weekly community updates on Facebook and local radio.

  • Mid-July until October
  • Increased volume of saline underground water (salt water) discharge into the Melvin Bay (from 800 m3 to 1,600 m3 per day).
  • Increased trucks on the AWAR to transport the saline water from Meliadine to Itivia (from 32 one-way trips to 88 one-way trips per day).
  • Approved by NIRB on June 24th with updates to management plans, additional reporting, and community engagement requirements.

  • Consultations March 2020 and July 2020.
  • Increased volume of saline underground water discharge into the Melvin Bay (6,000 – 12,000 m3 per day).
  • 34-kilometer waterline: 2 x 16-inch pipes running along the AWAR from Meliadine to Itivia, sitting on the land with caribou crossings.
  • The waterline would replace the trucks from the “2020 Saline Discharge Strategy”.
