Blumetric Environmental staff recently conducted remediation and environmental assessment at an abandoned Camp site, located southeast of the Boston area, with the support of Agnico Eagle’s Hope Bay facilities. This collaboration underscores the commitment of both organizations to environmental stewardship and teamwork.

The project involved transporting a multidisciplinary team, including engineers, field assistants, and a wildlife monitor, via a 70 km helicopter flight. Hope Bay provided essential logistical and operational support, including accommodations, food, transportation, and fuel. Notably, 20 recycled empty Jet-A fuel barrels were repurposed at the camp site, highlighting a sustainable approach to managing resources in remote areas.

During the assessment, Blumetric successfully gathered soil, water, and sediment samples to understand contamination levels. The team also transferred liquid from old fuel barrels to newly labeled ones, preparing them for future transportation in 2025. This effort not only addressed environmental concerns but also identified opportunities to repurpose usable fuel for heaters at Hope Bay, reducing waste and transportation needs.

The success of this project was made possible by the incredible resourcefulness and collaboration of the Hope Bay team. Key contributions included:

  • Morgan assisting with safety and camp logistics.
  • Sheldon managing fuel barrel logistics and equipment.
  • John, Brett, and Mike facilitating shipping, storage, and overall site operations.

The efforts of the Hope Bay team created a supportive environment with a “home-like” feel, even in the face of challenges such as flight delays and last-minute requests.

Agnico Eagle is proud to have supported Blumetric in this crucial initiative to address contamination in the region while ensuring safe and efficient operations. This partnership highlights the importance of collaboration in achieving shared environmental goals.
