Last month, members of the Kivalliq Elders Advisory Committee (KEAC) traveled to Toronto to support David Kritterdlik as he received the PDAC 2025 Skookum Jim Award. The group included David Owingayak, Rosie Oolooyuk, and Levenia Brown along with David’s wife, Susie Kritterdlik, and their daughter Sharon Qiyuk.

The trip got off to an interesting start for David’s wife, Susie Kritterdlik, as blizzard-related conditions resulted in flight delays. No plane? No problem! Susie made the journey from Whale Cove to Rankin Inlet on a snowmobile, driven by their son Malachi. This two-and-a-half-hour adventure ensured she wouldn’t miss the event.

2,280 km later, the KEAC members were warmly welcomed in Toronto by Agnico Eagle’s senior management and Nunavut leadership. They engaged in meaningful discussions and workshops, including a lunchtime session with the Corporate Community Relations Team, where they provided insights into Agnico Eagle’s Reconciliation Action Plan. They also participated in a recording session for the Elder’s episode of the Arctic Edge Podcast, where David Kritterdlik, David Owingayak, Levenia Brown, and Rosie Oolooyuk shared their experiences and perspectives. Pujjuut Kusugak, Director of Nunavut Affairs, sat in with the elders to provide translation support.

In his acknowledgment speech, David expressed his gratitude to the Elders, his colleagues, and his family, emphasizing the importance of integrating Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) values into operations, reflecting the wisdom and strength of the Inuit communities.

Following their memorable time in Toronto, everyone made it home safely and are now back to their important work, ensuring a better tomorrow for the people of Nunavut. David’s award-winning efforts in promoting Inuit values, cultural preservation, and sustainable development continue to inspire and drive positive change. Together with Agnico Eagle, the KEAC remains dedicated to building a brighter future for the communities we operate in.
