The annual Festival by the Lake brought together community members, families and friends for a day of celebration and activities in Baker Lake. As a long-time supporter of the event, Agnico Eagle was pleased to once again take part in the festivities, hosting a community barbecue, serving cotton candy that quickly became a favourite among attendees, and participating in a friendly baseball game between employees and community members. 

The festival also provided the perfect setting for an important announcement. During the event, Agnico Eagle and Peter's Expediting Limited (PEL), represented by President Peter Tapatai, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening local service capacity and creating new economic opportunities in the Kivalliq region.  

The MOU outlines the parties' intention to collaborate on the development of a mechanical repair and support facility in Baker Lake, initially focused on axle repair and related maintenance services supporting Agnico Eagle's Meadowbank and Amaruq operations. The agreement is intended to provide a framework for cooperation as both organizations explore ways to build local operational capacity and support future service requirements.  

Developing repair capabilities closer to Agnico Eagle's operations has the potential to improve responsiveness, support operational efficiency and reduce transportation-related delays. The initiative also aligns with a shared objective of increasing local and Inuit participation in industrial services while supporting economic development in the region.  

The agreement reflects a commitment from both organizations to work together to identify opportunities related to employment, training, and business development. By investing in local capacity and expertise, the partnership aims to create lasting benefits for Baker Lake and the broader Kivalliq region.  

The signing was one of many highlights of a successful Festival by the Lake, which brought people together to celebrate community spirit and enjoy a wide range of activities throughout the day. Through partnerships like this one, Agnico Eagle continues to support local businesses, strengthen community relationships, and contribute to the long-term prosperity of Nunavut communities.
