Agnico Eagle reports that cleanup operations of the fuel spill at its Meliadine site resumed on Thursday, April 13th, after being interrupted on Tuesday, April 11th, due to blizzard conditions.

The spill, involving approximately 30,000 litres of diesel, was caused by a leak from a hose on one of the 100,000-litre diesel storage tanks at the fuel tank storage facility located at the Meliadine project near Rankin Inlet on Saturday, April 8, 2017. The spill was contained to the localized area and, based on existing evidence, did not reach any fresh water. Monitoring and cleanup activities are ongoing and the Company expects to complete all remaining cleanup work in the following week.

The Company is also in the process of completing its internal investigation on the cause of the leak. Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the spill occurred due to a defective safety valve on the storage tank, as well as inadequate operating procedures and insufficient training. Agnico Eagle has begun implementing corrective measures.

An update will be provided once the cleanup operations are completed later next week.
