Meliadine Wins John T. Ryan Regional Safety Award

Honoured as Safest Metal Mine in Prairie Provinces and Territories

For the first time ever, one of Agnico Eagle’s Nunavut operations has won one of the industry’s most prestigious awards for its outstanding safety record.

On May 1st at the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum’s (CIM’s) 2023 Conference Gala in Montreal, Meliadine mine received the Institute’s John T. Ryan Regional Safety Trophy in the Metal Mine category for experiencing the lowest reportable injury frequency[1] in the Prairie Provinces and Territories in 2022.

“This first win is an important milestone for Nunavut and for Meliadine,” commented Charles-André Langevin, Meliadine mine’s Health & Safety Superintendent. “This recognition is a testament to the relentless efforts and dedication of all the individuals on site who have contributed to creating a safer workplace over the past three years. It’s a celebration of the collective commitment towards ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for everyone.”

Meliadine mine’s General Manager, Jean-Claude Blais said: “It is with a great amount of pride that the Meliadine team receives this award. We are always putting health and safety at the forefront of all discussions and decisions, with the goal of having everyone return home healthy and safe at each end of their work rotation. This recognition remains the beginning of a long journey in which we will continue looking to further strengthen our safety culture and behaviours.”

In April, the Meliadine mine Health & Safety team launched their Collision Zero campaign to reduce the probability of collisions on site – above and below ground, and for employees and contractors working across the site. Under this initiative, all departments, including Underground and Open Pit mining, Energy & Infrastructures, Training, and Health & Safety, will work together to improve their health and safety behaviors at the worker level.

“This campaign is another demonstration of the concrete actions we are taking to continuously improve the health and safety of our workforce. What makes it even greater is that the team joined efforts proactively to efficiently launch the campaign,” added Jean-Claude Blais.

To further recognize the contributions of all workers towards this achievement, the John T. Ryan Regional Safety Trophy will be brought back to Meliadine where employees and contractors will be able to take photos posing with the award.

Congratulations to the Meliadine team!
