At Agnico Eagle, we value career growth and want to give equal fair opportunities to our employees. We want to leave a legacy in the communities in which we operate. One of the best ways to do this is to provide long-term jobs and career development opportunities. As such, we implemented a hiring process for the Inuit workforce. This hiring program, named the Nunavut Labour Pool, was implemented to facilitate access to job opportunities at our Nunavut Mine sites for Nunavummiut. The original program consisted of many steps including an online application process and attending mandatory training sessions. Once completed, the candidates would become part of the Nunavut Labour Pool, which made them eligible for employment.

A New Process in the Making

In 2022, the entire process was reviewed and then revised to better meet the needs of community members who are looking for employment at Agnico Eagle. ‘’We want to have a community-based approach when thinking about employment at our Nunavut mines. It is important for us to adapt our methods to their needs. By doing so, we are hoping to be a more inclusive employer of choice’’, says Joanie Dénommé, Inuit Employment Coordinator at Agnico Eagle. But what does it really mean to do recruitment with a community-based approach? To us, it begins by learning from community members what their experience with us, as a local employer, is and how they want our recruitment process to work – what kind of positions are of interest to them at the mine sites and what are the best channels to reach them when an opportunity arises. The changes to the previous process will have an even greater impact since we are looking towards the younger generation and therefore, the future of our Nunavut workforce.

Sanajiksanut – Inspiring Pride and Empowering the Workforce

The Sanajiksanut program aims to position Agnico Eagle as an employer of choice in Nunavut. By tailoring our programs, we want to inspire pride in our workforce at an individual level as they become part of the Agnico Eagle family. Not only do we want to grow local employment, but we also want to help develop local talents through our various custom-built training programs and empower our Inuit workforce to build their own legacy within their communities. Our goal is also for this program to inspire and provide opportunities to the youth – the future of our Inuit workforce – who may be considering a career in mining or may want to grow their leadership skills.

Sanajaksanut Sivummuaqta – Let’s Move Forward in Employment

Sanajaksanut Sivummuaqta or Let’s Move Forward in Employment, means more than just hiring people to complete tasks in a specific job. The true meaning is about letting potential employees know that we are changing our perspective and looking forward to having more qualified local employees in a wide variety of positions at our mine sites. We are energized and excited about this new employment process and we will be focusing our efforts on our new vision and strategy to facilitate access to employment and increase career opportunities and growth for the Inuit workforce. As we continue to grow as a company, it’s important to us that our local community members can benefit from our activities and take full advantage of job opportunities at our mine sites. We believe this program is a step forward.
