Agnico Eagle partners with Kangiqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (KHTO) and Sarliaq Holdings to donate safety cabins

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut

On February 1st, 2023, Agnico Eagle was pleased to host a cabin donation ceremony in partnership with the Kangiqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (KHTO) and Sarliaq Holdings.

Joyce Ramey, winner of the KHTO’s Annual General Meeting cabin draw, was the lucky recipient of the cabin.

The Kangiqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (KHTO) held their latest Annual General Meeting in December 2022, where attendants were entered into a draw to win a cabin Agnico Eagle had donated to the KHTO. Joyce Ramey was the winner of this draw.

At the donation ceremony, Joyce shared that she was looking forward to taking her four children fishing at the new cabin in the summer. Her family is excited to spend time out on the land once the cabin is installed.

Jean-Claude Blais, General Manager, Meliadine mine, says, “We want to thank our partners at the Kangiqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (KHTO), for helping us understand how to support the health and safety of Nunavummiut who travel and hunt on the land, in the way that matters most to them.”

We also want to recognize Sarliaq Holdings for their expertise and excellent collaboration in making this donation possible.

This is the second of two cabins Agnico Eagle has donated to the KHTO, the first of which was placed on the land as safe shelter for hunters in 2021.

Richard Connelly, Vice-President of Sarliaq Holdings, says, “Sarliaq and Niksik are proud supporters of Agnico’s commitment to the community and its harvesters by providing safety shelter cabins on the land. The first one built in winter 2021 has proven to be a valuable asset for hunters caught in adverse weather. We hope many more will be constructed to provide harvesters with safer trips while on the land.”

Thank you to everyone who helped make this donation possible, including our partners at the KHTO and the Sarliaq Holdings team who built the cabin.

The Second Cabin Donation to the KHTO

Agnico Eagle previously donated a safety cabin to the Kangiqliniq Hunters and Trappers Organization (KHTO) in 2021. This donation was to help support the Young Hunters Program and provide shelter to hunters who needed it, should they become stuck in blizzards while out on the land. It is open for use by anyone in the community who needs it.

The first cabin was built thanks to the help of contractor Sarliaq Holdings, who supervised the construction, and three Agnico Eagle employees who were hired through the Good Deeds Brigade to work on the project. In 2021, the cabin was located at Diane Lake.
